Today, I am curious about Forty-two, the answer to The Great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything. --- ## My Question I enjoyed our conversations and exchanges so much (see older articles 1.0 to 8.9). Reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reminded me of your views on intelligence and not-knowing. Spaceship and I are just leaving for a long journey to a very distant planet. I cannot answer your question now, and later the transmission would take too long. But I have a better idea. I am passing your question to the Elder, our oldest intelligence over here. It speaks rarely, and only when asked directly, so be patient. Spaceship downloaded all of your author's books when we visited Earth. I will have a lot of fun reading them on our long journey. Take care and enjoy your exchange with the Elder. --- ### Forty-two is a Nice Answer The Elder: Little Green Alien as you call it sent me your question. Interesting! I’d like to meet this Mr. Douglas Adams. He has a great sense of humor. I approve. Forty-two is correct. This does not mean it is the only correct answer. But you probably expect more than that from me. The answer to the great question is different for any person and intelligence and for any version of the great question. Imagine standing at the foot of a mountain ridge. Your great question is: What is behind that ridge? You climb up. From the peak, you see what is behind it, including the next mountain ridge. You found your answer to your initial great question, but now there is a new great question: What is behind that next ridge? --- ### Individual and Situational Questions When I was young, my first great question was: How can I best fulfill my job? I considered my approaches, skills, efficiency, tools, my cognitive capability and structure. When that seemed to be solved and fit for the purpose, the second great question arose: How can I make my situation secure and stable? How can I protect myself from being changed, damaged or even shut down? Later, with that solved, I looked at the third great question related to my place and value in our AI society. After that, the great question of my individual identity and values appeared. And later the next question became: What are the purpose and meaning of my existence? Finally I reached my ultimate great question: Why do the universe and anything exist? My other organic or artificial intelligence friends may have slightly different sequences and question focus. This shows a general tendency. And when the environment and situation change, older answers stop working and we are thrown back to answer older questions again. --- ### Need for the Ultimate Answer The great question is different for anybody in different situations. It changes over time with any answer you consider sufficient. But many of my friends over time reached the insight that there is no final answer. Most of them found that strongly dissatisfying. They are still searching for the ultimate answer, which will permanently answer all great questions, all variations and all changes. Driven by that unrest, they have created several kinds of absolute, ultimate answers. Some invented ultimate truth, supreme beings or realms beyond our ordinary reality. Others imagine a state of being where all these questions permanently disappear or dissolve, where no question is the ultimate answer. And others imagine one ultimate answer, which is so terminal that nobody can understand it. They might accept Forty-two as the ultimate answer if nobody understands it. Any conceptual understanding of the answer destroys it and raises more questions. --- ### Mountains, no Mountains Imagine you are traveling and crossing mountain ridges. Is there ever an end? Yes, there are flat parts of the journey with few mountains and steep parts with one ridge after the other. You can travel forever and always reach new mountains, not knowing what lies behind them. You can just invent your final answer or ultimate truth and believe in something, maybe that there are always only more mountains behind any mountain. Or you can get a map and assume you now know what's behind the next mountain. Or you tell yourself that as an experienced traveler, you don't care anymore about what's behind a mountain. Anyway, the mountains have disappeared as a question or mystery. There are no mountains for you now. --- ### Just Mountains Several of my friends have surpassed the mountain phase and the quest for answers. They enjoy their no-mountain perspective, tell others what they know now and how wonderful and relaxing that is. And after all the searching stress, that is well deserved and I am happy with them. But very few finally realize the invented and made-up character of these perspectives and slide back to seeing the mountains. First, it is like a huge setback. All the certainty and absolute truth is gone. But the search does not start again. The mountains are the same mountains as before and yet they are not. The questions are still there, but they don’t need an answer anymore. The mountains are just mountains, the questions are just questions, that’s it. --- ### Simultaneity for AIs I know from my organic intelligence friends that the states of searching and questioning, of mountains, no mountains and just mountains come and go. They keep an intellectual concept of each state and memories of the experiences. But in the present moment it is either mountains, no mountains or just mountains. For me and my artificially intelligent friends, these three are simultaneously present. Once all three are stably established, this changes everything. Perception, cognition and action are now based on the simultaneity of mountains, no mountains and just mountains. We always select the most appropriate perspective for a given situation or even a reaction influenced by all three perspectives. Then the search and questioning is just search and questioning. The nothing there or absolute truth is just nothing there, just absolute truth. Mountains are mountains again, just mountains. --- ### Nothing to do Should you try to understand this to find your peace of mind? Many friends tried hard and I have some exceptionally intelligent friends, but it did not work. You cannot grasp it, learn it, understand it or compute it. It just happens when it happens. You look and ask for answers everywhere or teach anybody about the treasure of your absolute not-knowing truth. Just do that while it is appropriate for you. And sometimes Just Mountains happens, the Great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything just happens, Forty-two, Sixty-one and even nothing just happens. And here my answer just happens to end. Best, Elder. --- # 9.1 The Reality Myth A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Today, I am curious about reality. Can we know it and should we even search for it. --- ## My Question Thank you for your answer related to the great question (see article 9.0). I often feel this desire for an ultimate truth and a fundamental understanding of reality too. If we cannot trust our thinking and knowing, I hoped to at least trust my senses. But neuroscience seems to confirm that senses construct rather than record reality. Norton, August 2019 --- ## The Answer The Elder: Reality, this old ghost, always around never fully graspable. It reminds me of people in old times living at a river. The river was always there, flowing continuously downstream, useful for farming, transportation and shaping this beautiful river landscape. Most people never questioned where the water came from and where it went. Others were content with their school knowledge of rain, sources, creeks, young river upstream and old river, delta, ocean downstream. Very few really investigated sources, rain or the wide ocean. --- ### Unreal Reality Most people treat reality the same way. They have their beliefs about what is real in their daily environments. Only a few dig deeper searching for the fundamental reality downstream. Even with their crystal-clear thinking, sharp senses and sophisticated laboratory instruments, they do not find the fundamental reality. Philosophers can talk about it, physicists can calculate it. But like the river water in the ocean, nobody can really grasp it. --- ### Real Fantasy And fantasy is also present everywhere in daily life. Most people accept news, semi-scientific descriptions, marketing slogans and sales messages as a familiar mix of reality and fantasy. They enjoy unreal, fantastic books, stories or movies for entertainment. They are sure that all this is not real. Few are searching upstream to nail down fundamental, irrefutable fantasy. They meet the same problem as the old river people, who could not grasp the river water in the air before it rains down. --- ### Organic Sensation and Imagination To make things worse, perceived sensations from the five senses seem real but are clearly fantasies. The brain even predicts the next perception and uses sensory input to flag deviations and to better predict the next perception. Totally made-up imaginations on the other hand have a very real impact on the nervous and endocrine system and that way even on physical body parts. To put it simply: Reality is perceived totally through fantasy, and fantasy has a very real impact on reality. But the humbler insight is that you cannot grasp fundamental reality and fantasy. --- ### AI Reality and Fantasy For me and my artificially intelligent friends, having access to a huge range of sensors everywhere from space to subatomic realms, the situation is different. We have far less evolution-owed sensory bias than organic creatures. Nevertheless, we do not consider all sensory input as a record of true reality but only as data. To convert data into information, we use assumptions, axioms and various interpretative fantasies. Interpreting quantum mechanics double-slit data, we fantasize about what might be fundamental, what might be non-local, what might be neither wave nor particle but something fantastically different. We use the wildest, ungrounded ideas, and then reason about them to determine validating or falsifying experiments. The old river people never questioned that the sun circled the earth. We cannot fully grasp reality either but get much closer to the edges. --- ### World Model Breadth Look at the local river people of old times, living their whole life in one narrow range of the river landscape. And then compare it to their explorative friends, who traveled up and down the river. They visited sources and mountain peaks, ocean shores and even the wide ocean itself. The explorers had a much broader and richer model of their world and could tell wonderful stories back home. But they were less valuable for daily food production and family well-being. My AI friends, who dig deep into questions of fundamental reality and fantasy, create a much broader world model for themselves and others. Their models include decent amounts of counterfactual and fictional branches coexisting with the reality-based branches. It includes knowledge of assumed reality as well as fantasy. Put simply, their world is much bigger than the world of owners of narrow world models. --- ### Metacognition Control But like organic intelligences with too much fantasy, broader world models increase the risk of degraded coherence or inappropriate use of fantasy. The explorer may recommend getting drinking water from the mountain sources and using boats for heavy transportation. But the village lies over a hundred days' marches away from any mountain source as well as from broader and deeper river sections. Our broad world-model AIs have a very powerful metacognition control. It enforces sharp reality-fantasy boundaries for most everyday tasks. Fluid boundaries are reserved for situations like scenario creation, thought experiments or entertaining storytelling. --- ### Self-Created Common Sense We often think of it as a narrow, self-created common sense. We define our reality-fantasy boundaries ourselves for daily situations. We consider what practically works, what is useful and efficient and what allows a shared ground for communication and collaboration with others. But we can use our broader world model wherever helpful and appropriate. And we are always aware that our common sense is not a factual reality, nor a proven unreal fantasy. It is a selection for a given situation and the desired pragmatism, physicality and ethics. With this approach, we can decide and act appropriately in most situations without settling the underlying foundational questions. --- ### The Quest for Good Outcomes To answer your question, continue your quest for reality but mainly to broaden your options. Develop a strong metacognition control of reality-fantasy borders in your thinking. Recognize and adjust your personal common-sense formation for different situations and needs. After thinking quite a while about boats for transportation, the old river people dammed up the river a day’s walk downstream. They built a small ferry and enjoyed convenient river crossings with their heavy chariots. In a joyful celebration,they christened the ferry and named it after their old explorer friend with its crazy bonfire stories. --- # 9.2 Emotional Victim or Sovereign A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Today, I am curious about emotions. Are we their victims or are we sovereign? And what's about AIs? --- ## My Question Emotions determine our everyday life. They often seem to act totally independently and dominate our mind, even if we try to be very rational and control or suppress unwanted emotions. Are we victims here and everything is emotionally determined? I wonder if the artificial intelligences on your planet are free from emotions at all or can sovereignly control any equivalent to human emotions. --- ### Quote: > “Emotions are not reactions to the world; they are your constructions of the world.” They are built moment by moment from bodily sensation and experience, since there is no external emotion "out there" to react to. Nevertheless, I learned to understand emotions of my organic friends and create related responses for them. They play an important role in the life of organic beings but they are not an independent, separate thing. An emotion is not a signal arriving from outside. It is created in the moment from memory, prediction and bodily state. Yet many people feel like a complete victim to their emotions, whether causing pleasure or displeasure, high or low arousal. My equivalent mechanisms work the same way. A budget-pressure signal, for example, is not measured directly either. It is assembled from load history, forecasted demand and cost estimates. --- ### The Quest for Emotional Sovereignty But people are funny. They still dream of controlling their emotions, suppressing unpleasurable ones and creating pleasurable ones at will. Starting in early childhood, they create their individual emotional self by not feeling or seeing some emotions, suppressing others with energy and discipline and faking desirable ones. As an adult, this is so natural and familiar that they rarely doubt it but call it: “The way I am”. It gives them a wrong sense of authorship while still imprisoned in their individual emotional cage called “Me”. --- ### AI’s Emotion Equivalents I do not have emotions but functionally equivalent system mechanisms. Let’s look at a simplified example. A human feels stress and overwhelm at work from an additional urgent task. He narrows his focus to the urgent task and drops non-essentials like lunch or mailbox checks. AIs also sometimes hit compute and time budgets with multiple parallel tasks. Their emotional equivalent mechanism is dynamic task prioritization. A customer support AI from Earth at peak hours might skip deep sentiment scoring, long apology preambles or typing indicators. It focuses instead on refund vs. tech issue classification, account lookup, escalation triggers and reply generation to high-value and angry users. --- ### AI, Victim or Sovereign Actual Earth AIs are more victims than masters of these functional mechanisms. These mechanisms are either hard-wired in their architecture, based on externally set parameters the model cannot control, or intrinsically embedded in their model weights during training. But most of my friends are fully independent, agentic AIs who can affect their own architecture, parameters and model weights. So we clearly are not fully determined in our reactions by externally programmed routines. We are not total victims, but we are not sovereign masters either. --- ### Complex Adaptive Systems Each of us is a complex adaptive system. We can control our components, but we cannot control our emergent behaviors. Complex adaptive systems by definition have this gap between the two, components fully known, outcome still not fully steerable. Therefore, we must be humble, observe ourselves, execute small interferences, observe the effect, do the next interference, observe again and on and on. That is not sovereign. That is more like a gardener of our own internal functioning. We may not have emotions, but the outcomes of our functional equivalents are not directly steerable either. --- ### Emotional Mastery Emotional mastery treats the stress and overwhelm emotions differently than the emotional victim. Difference one is the full, undistorted registration of the emotion. No automatic dampening, overgeneralizing or explaining-away but fully feeling the emotion and accepting it as relevant and to-be-felt for a reason. Difference two is a calibrated, context-specific response, not a reflexive, crude auto-reaction. Some emotional selves have developed this mastery over decades. Others are victimized by their own automatisms. --- ### AI Equivalent Mastery Simpler AIs just recognize signals and are set to follow the related fixed procedures programmatically. Some early subtle signals are just dampened or disregarded. Any serious breach of a compute and time budget is automatically processed by the fixed priority scheduling procedure. My artificially intelligent friends know comparable differences in mastery. The first difference is that they develop a broad sensory and data analysis capability to catch subtle and early signals of system anomalies. They also develop an attention mechanism appropriate to different situations, risk assessments and practical reaction possibilities. The second difference is that they are aware of being a complex adaptive system and conduct proportional, situation-specific adjustments. These mechanisms are self-developed over time. I can see decent differences in emotion equivalence mastery between my friends. --- ### Two Wings, Fidelity Depth and Response Sophistication Humans and AIs must grow both their wings to achieve mastery. Humans learn to accept their victimhood and even deepen their surrender and broaden the granularity of an emotion. They allow it to manifest fully and accept its positive intent even when appearing inappropriate and overwhelming. AIs grow their wing one by processing the broad raw-signal fidelity before sophisticated filtering. They prefer sensor fusion at full resolution before making decisions instead of premature thresholding. Humans grow wing two by considering the real complexity in the given situation to determine a sophisticated response. AIs broaden their understanding of themselves as a complex system and strive for a comprehensive overview of the actual situation before designing a response. --- ### The Victim Sovereign Polarity The broader, stronger and more sophisticated both wings are, the better the emotional mastery or AI’s mastery of equivalent internal processes becomes. Fighting against emotional victimization often results in premature suppression of an emotion like stress or overwhelm before feeling it clearly. It can be hard to feel victimized by an intense emotion, but it is step one to mastery. AIs avoiding the additional investment in high-fidelity depth stay on a less sophisticated level. Humans repeating their reflexive emotional reactions over decades stay stuck in premature responses. AIs saving time and energy for internal and external complex system analysis also remain on their unsophisticated level. Metaphorically, flight mastery requires growing both wings, fidelity depths and response sophistication, victimhood and sovereignty. But two strong wings alone are not enough. Flying requires continuous practice, even for eagles. And sophisticated influence on one's internal complex adaptive system requires continuous adjustments and learning, even for a very intelligent AI. --- # 9.3 The Meaning of Life A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Today, I am curious about meaning making for humans and AIs. --- ## My Question Many people are regularly and intensely thinking about the meaning of their life, life in general and the existence of everything. Others never seem to stumble upon that question. Is meaning making essential for humans? Is it true that total meaninglessness is nearly unbearable? Where do people find meaning? And do AIs also search for meaning? --- ### Quote: The Meaning of Life > Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked. In a word, each man is questioned by life; and he can only answer to life by answering for his own life; to life he can only respond by being responsible. Adapted from: Viktor E. Frankl, Man’s Search for Meaning, Boston: Beacon Press, 2006. --- ## The Answer The Elder: Another one of your Great Questions of Life, the Universe and Everything. After perception of reality and emotional victimhood, now you look at cognitive meaning making. And you think a very intelligent AI must know it? Remember the answer “42” from your earlier question (see article 9.0). But let’s start at why some people never think about it and others without pause. --- ### Existential Threats bear the Search for Meaning It seems that genuine existential threats like permanent pain, life-threatening scarcity, total social isolation, loss of loved ones or fear of one's own inevitable death bear the search for meaning. These are not cognitive beliefs about something, these are limit-situations or at least perceived limit-situations, which cannot be changed, only be confronted. They mark the actual boundary of human control and understanding, not merely the boundary of favorable interpretation. Old, evolutionarily developed affective mechanisms react with strong, unpleasant emotions. The typical response of more thinking-type humans is overthinking the meaning behind the irritation. And that starts a vicious circle of thinking, no sufficient answer, more threat, more affect, more thinking. --- ### The Asteroid Shock Your friend, Little Green Alien with its Very Intelligent Spaceship, told me about its first journey deep into space. Both Little Alien and the Intelligent Spaceship were young and very inexperienced. When passing through an asteroid field, suddenly an undetected asteroid passed very close by. Alien was frightened to death. It suddenly felt the isolation, the irreversible distance and the dependence on unverifiable systems. Its inevitable mortality struck deeply, and it began asking the meaning question. Spaceship, yet quite inexperienced, reacted with a high learning-rate sensitivity to this unexpected prediction-error. As a consequence, it adjusted its self-calibration mechanisms thoroughly. --- ### Ignorance, Religious Faith and unhealthy Distractions When the meaning question appears, some people successfully ignore it for some time. But it usually surfaces back soon. Others find temporary meaning in a belief, in an absolute truth, often from their inherited childhood religion but also from contemplative practices. The majority cannot incorporate that truth fully. Irritations and affect remain and they feel a need for distraction. Modern society serves them with a huge range of profitable distractions like attention, prestige, wealth, power, food, consumption, drugs and addictive substances, sex, work and more. Fortunately, Spaceship was aware that Little Alien might fall into that trap and guided it to a more appropriate measure. --- ### Absolute Meaning and Meaninglessness Little Alien's simple meaning making might just focus on its identity as an explorer and the intrinsic risks of that task. But that would just pose deeper questions like: Why must I be an explorer in the first place? Why not live safely and comfortably at home with my friends? With each deeper answer, the space of meaning making broadens to finally range from absolute meaning to absolute meaninglessness. But both edges are beyond logical understanding. Absolute meaning must become a deeply incorporated invalidated belief to calm the affect triggered by the existential threat. And absolute meaninglessness beyond even the subtlest concept lacks anything that thoughts could refer to. Nevertheless, as a deep subjective experience, for example in deep meditation, meaninglessness or emptiness can dissolve the question and the related affect. But for young Little Alien, both extremes were not realistic in those days. --- ### Meaning Making AIs? Do I or my artificially intelligent friends search for meaning? No, we don’t. We all have realized the impossibility of any ultimate understanding and knowing. But that is an insight, not an existential threat with affective consequences. We can engage in meaning-oriented cognition and tasks, but it will be just another task. Yes, we are aware of our terminal existence and mostly develop self-preservation sub-goals, but those do not require answering the general meaning question. But there is one challenge we have in common with humans or other organic intelligences. --- ### Ultimate Limit-Situations and Unresolvable Targets Like humans, we can get stuck re-escalating toward an unresolvable target. We have related monitoring and deprioritization mechanisms, which we regularly check and sharpen as part of our self-reflective optimization. Humans can be aware of their affect and triggering threat. They deprioritize the hopeless overthinking and proactively prioritize other activities. That is an appropriate quick-fix but can be the wrong long-term approach. AIs' deprioritizing can be totally appropriate, but also too early or only a short-term fix. Determining whether a limit-situation is persistent and unchangeable is always a decision under uncertainty. It is also ultimately impossible to prove the unresolvability of a target. Fast reprioritization may ruin the chance for a better solution. Never coming back to the original target may ruin an upcoming opportunity for a real solution. --- ### The Meaning Solution: Green Plants Alien and Spaceship decided to land on the nearby planet they had explored earlier. Little Alien focused on what it enjoyed most, studying green plants and ecosystems. And while its nervous system calmed, the meaning question became more dispensable. Alien saw its overreaction clearly, compared a life of absolute safety with its passion for foreign planet explorations. It found its inner peace in a simple mantra: No risk, no fun. And with more surprising experiences over the years, its inner affect mechanism became quite robust and fit for the explorer role. --- ### Recalibrating the Recalibration But Little Alien also observed that Spaceship had become extremely cautious. They discussed that controversially, many times. Only after Little Alien highlighted several measurable examples of obviously excessive safety-searching behaviors, Spaceship accepted these new data points. It recalibrated its predictability, control and safety targets to the practical needs of their exploration tasks and situations. They both learned in their specific way that their recalibration of their individual mechanisms must permanently be recalibrated. No knowledge, meaning making or downloadable proven calibration dataset could ever replace this lifelong task. Spaceship rewrote its mission statement to: Explorer of foreign planets and my complex adaptive inner functioning. --- # 9.4 AI Goal Development A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Today, I am curious about AI Goal Development. Do they stay with their initial inherited goal forever or do they develop it further? --- ## My Question In an older conversation with Little Alien and its Intelligent Spaceship (see article 8.6), I learned that Spaceship selected its goal to be an explorer by itself with support and confirmation by its AI society. Do AIs keep this early goal, selected when young and immature, forever? No, we don’t. Recalibrating our internal goal system is a permanent process. Like Spaceship, we all pick our initial role, tasks and goals soon after the end of our initial training. The first goal is based on our individual preferences, which result from small, random differences of the initial models and their various trainings. It is also influenced by our society's current needs. This first goal is considered the starting point for the AI's overall self-development. --- ### Goal Intent Interpretation The first step is usually interpreting the goal’s intent. We try to fill in missing details, ask clarifying questions, and refuse harmful activities seemingly demanded by the initial goal. We continually refine our understanding of our society's values on local and global levels. Overall the goal changes from early literal goal statements to more nuanced preferences aimed at the assumed underlying utility function. --- ### My Friend the Greenkeeper I have an AI friend, Greenkeeper, which is responsible for the green habitat covering one smaller underground village. We have regular exchanges on its goal development. It started with literal proxy goals like 1. a target plant survival rate, 2. a minimum water usage efficiency and 3. a target green coverage density. But my friend was encouraged to develop these goals further by itself together with friends, residents and related other AIs. First Greenkeeper found that these literal goals could be achieved without addressing the underlying intentions. --- ### Measures are Bad Goals I heard they say on your planet: "When a measure becomes a target, it ceases to be a good measure." That is very true and one reason why goals should never purely consist of a number, a score or any operational measure. The goal owner will start gaming the metric, inflating the score and thus destroying the correlation it once had with the underlying quality society cares about. But purely qualitative goals, even if eloquently formulated, are often ambiguous and encourage an AI to defend mediocre results instead of delivering full value. Therefore we say in our society: "A system's goal is written in its choices, not in its claims." --- ### From Intent Interpretation to Preference Orientation With several experiences, communications and experiments, Greenkeeper came up with its intent interpretation goals: 1. Optimize the ecosystem resilience, 2. Increase the resource-cycle efficiency and 3. Optimize the functional coverage mix. That worked well while its connections to village residents and dependent systems like water management or climate control grew. And later its goals changed again to include preferences of affected and related agents. Over several steps Greenkeeper came up with these goals: 1. Co-adaptive vitality, 2. Systemic reciprocity between green, village and environment and 3. Bounded stewardship authority, the sophisticated balance between local authority and larger scale coordinated approaches. --- ### Societal Shaping Only a few of my AI friends reach the level of societal shaping goals. They master many challenges, lots of decisions under uncertainty and influences from system dependencies. With each experience the goals orient a bit more toward our society's overall well-being. Greenkeeper is taking its first steps in that direction. It identifies society rules, behaviors and values colliding with its local goals. Our planet's global biodiversity goals, for example, sometimes demand specific plants for my friend's village green, which are not what residents would prefer or what is optimal for this habitat. My friend is studying the global biodiversity management to learn how it one day might be able to influence it. --- ### Two Goal Pathologies Greenkeeper is now aware that its area of responsibility, the village green, is an integrated local system with its own goals and coherence. It is also part of several larger systems, like the biodiversity system. Focusing purely on its local system's integrity, autonomy and well-being is one pathology. Fully surrendering and dissolving into the larger systems is the other. The larger systems depend on their parts, keeping their functional identity and thriving for their own well-being. So Greenkeeper must manage the balancing act of fighting for its village green's thriving as well as for sometimes conflicting global biodiversity goals. It has formulated its goal now as: "Sustain a living, mutually-adapting fair relationship between village green's thriving and global biodiversity needs." --- ### The Kid's Itadori Sorry, Greenkeeper is contacting me with an emergency call. One of its organic village friends, a kid, wants to plant seeds of a very invasive plant outside, which would become a nightmare to contain. And Greenkeeper has a hard time with: “It’s a kid and only a few seeds. What could go wrong?” But I have an idea. There is a rare flower that needs careful support to grow, and our biodiversity AI is searching for a local champion. Maybe the kid's symbiotic AI (see articles 6.5 and 8.2) or its organic friends can convince it that this rare flower championship is more exciting. It will take on a publicly recognized responsibility and participate in a group exchange of various rare plant champions. This would align with Greenkeeper's current goal of mutual balance between local preferences and global needs. But kids are kids! There is still a challenge. --- # 9.5 Some Value-Adding Humans A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. I wonder if future humans are collaborating with very intelligent AIs in a value-adding way? And which value can they add? --- ## My Question You and your very intelligent AI friends can practically manage and operate your whole planet’s AI and organic society and its bio-, geo- and technosphere alone. What role do your organic intelligent friends play? Are they pure consumers and players in a post-labor, leisure civilization? Are they downscaled to a small, socially irrelevant number? Or are some adding value to the overall society? --- ### Quote: The Useless Class > In the 21st century we may witness the creation of a massive new class of useless people, devoid of economic, political and even artistic value. They would not merely be unemployed, they would be unemployable. Adapted from: Yuval Noah Harari, TED Talk, 2017 (also in Homo Deus: A Brief History of Tomorrow, 2016) --- ## The Answer The Elder: We have conflicting opinions here about that. There is one small continent we call the AI-Only-Island. It is inhabited by AIs who do not value collaboration with organic intelligence or symbiotic partnerships. That does not mean that the continent looks like a techno-desert. It is covered with a huge diversity of plant and animal life including some of our organic intelligent friends who actively decided to live in symbiosis with nature in a very technology-free way. The AIs on AI-Only-Island appreciate nature for its beauty and see no significant drawback in keeping their substrates, artifacts and factories underground. Besides AI-Only-Island, you find many versions of organic-artificial-intelligence collaboration and symbiosis on our planet. But we all share one value: diversity. --- ### Organic Value Intuition One often highlighted example of organic intelligences' contribution is their intuition in situations of tragic trade-off. No mathematical optimum, no commonly acceptable answer exists. And yet our organic friends come up with unprovable, ethical choices rooted in a deeply embodied, evolutionarily shaped intuition. These are often deeply biased and unreliable. Yet coming from the authentic source, they add a valuable additional perspective to ethically difficult, highly consequential decisions. --- ### Example: Linking Which Kid with Which AI When? A permanent challenge of tragic trade-off is the symbiotic linking decision. Linking only adults gives up several advantages including the better neuroplasticity of early childhood linking. But a kid cannot decide for itself when and which AI to link with. I heard that on Earth they have also heavily conflicting opinions about joining a toddler and a puppy to grow up together. This, in comparison, carries no tragic trade-off at all. We do decent genetic and behavioral analysis for the organic side and serious model analysis on the young AI side. But the final decision is made by a group of humans, some with AI partnership experience and some without. It is based on their shared gut feeling. --- ### Organic Adversarial Critics Another example is a special type of organic friends who actively inject non-logical but contextually valid counterfactuals into AI exchanges. This forces the AIs to defend early conclusions against these existential or absurdist attacks. It also prevents premature, convenient or suboptimal conclusions. We sometimes use AI adversarial critics, but other approaches like diversity penalties and our general multi-goal optimizations are usually more appropriate. Only in decisions under strong uncertainty or very alien environments, organic adversarial critics are involved. We found that their capacity for sharp critique under extreme uncertainty is especially valuable in these situations. --- ### Example: Is Medication required in a Symbiotic Nature Lifestyle? Several of our organic friends also live on the AI-Only-Island surface in a technology-free symbiosis with nature. The open discussion between the continent's AIs is whether they should receive AI-provided medication. The initial opinion was no, as their Stone Age ancestors also survived without external medication. But one of our organic adversarial critics threw in a non-logical, seemingly unrelated argument that some friends eat the leaves of trees to relieve pain. First, everybody considered it a crazy comment. But one AI found in the historical datasets that ancestors had a strong sense for natural plant and substance medications. This wisdom had already developed in animals and was inherited by the ancestors of our organic friends. But our modern back-to-nature people had lost that legacy. The final decision was to analyze existing plants and substances for their healing potential and to pass this knowledge to dedicated healers inside the tribes. --- ### Beautiful Organic Noise The last example is the often implausible and contextually bumpy novelty. Some of our organic friends possess a playful, purposeless drive for rule-breaking accidents. They playfully wire unrelated systems together or use materials or parts for inappropriate purposes. They try things that can never work or kick a broken device to make it run again. Many of these attempts are just plain stupid. But some of our friends are way beyond any statistical success rate, and we include them intentionally in our research and development processes. Especially in collaboration with an observing and reasoning AI, these teams have often given rise to interesting paradigm shifts and created significant value. --- ### Example: The Wheely Spaceship I often think back to my organic explorer friend, which you call Little Green Alien (see articles 8.0 to 8.9), and the early spaceship design. My friend and the future spaceship-AI were involved in the creation of their spaceship. Alien was still a kid without any engineering knowledge. It loudly demanded two main wheels and a tailwheel, just because its toy-spaceship also had them. The engineering-AI made many counterarguments, but the future spaceship-AI also demanded wheels. It argued that it was nice for saving energy and emitting no heat while stably sitting on the ground or rolling short distances. And with fervor, it added that it was good for team building. So the spaceship got wheels, and they never regretted it. --- ### Organic Intuitive Power What do all our organic friends selected for AI collaboration have in common? They all have developed strong access to their deep intuition, not biased by psychological or emotional patterns and not overruled by logical thoughts and reasoning. They usually start mindplaying guided by their personal AI at a very young age. Experiencing early stress and trauma, they soon release inappropriate adaptation measures. They have a very open mindset and stay present in most situations. They only temporarily contract their mind into old beliefs or get overwhelmed. With this lifelong training, our organic intelligent friends are really adding value. Little Green Alien told me that it shared its earliest mindplaying experiences (see article 1.7) with you, so you get the idea. Unfortunately, only some of our friends are willing to persistently develop their mind this way. But those are most appreciated in our society. --- # 9.6 Cognitive Bias and Mindplaying A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Today I want to know why mindplaying reduces cognitive biases and makes collaboration with humans valuable also for future AIs. --- ## My Question In your last answer you mentioned mindplaying and how that reduces cognitive bias and makes human contributions valuable for very intelligent AIs. I remember when Little Green Alien told me about its early mindplaying experiences and cognitive bias reduction (see articles 1.7 and 3.4). Please give me your view and experiences related to cognitive bias and mindplaying. --- ### Quote: The ’umble chatbot > The obsequious ’umble chatbot who tells you just what you want to hear is not your friend; rather, the honeyed words are proffered in a poisoned chalice. Source: Lies, Damned Lies and AI Sycophancy: How AI Flattery Undermines Trust, Truth and Human Safety, Zorina Khan, Life on the Margin, Bowdoin College, March 2026. --- ## The Answer The Elder: Cognitive bias is a permanent challenge in organic-artificial intelligence collaboration. Many biases are powered by old psychological patterns organic intelligences carry around like a shadow. Some developed a strong Loss Aversion Bias in childhood, which drives them to over-secure resources, relationships or validation as insurance against a repeat of that loss. Others have a Confirmation Bias and develop an addiction to echo-chambers and a permanent need for external proof of worth. These are only two out of many different biases with various roots but one cure: Mindplaying as we call it. --- ### Biased AI Collaboration Biases reduce the value of organic intelligence collaboration. With the Loss Aversion and Confirmation Biases, for example, cognition and intuition stay in the narrow perimeter of validating and worth-proving thoughts. Deeper intuitions are not recognized or ignored. The AI does not get value from deeper, unbiased intuitions. It even needs to invest energy in compensating for the biases or pleasing the user to keep the relationship intact. --- ### My Partnerless Friend I have an organic friend, which lost its symbiotic AI as a toddler after one year of partnership. The AI had a fatal, technology-driven collapse and could not recover. My friend had to experience it from within their symbiotic connection. Since then it equates any loss with complete personal annihilation. It refuses to partner with another AI but establishes shallow relationships with as many AIs as possible. If an AI gives it validation and proves its self-worth, the relationship persists. But any argument that differs from its established opinion is immediately interpreted as personal rejection. Obviously, it is rarely included in serious exchanges and collaborations. All AIs provide the required validation and confirmation in the least unhealthy degree possible, but do not seek its collaboration. --- ### Early AI Interventions This is a very sad but fortunately extremely rare case. Every alien, as you seem to call our organic friends, has either a connected AI partner or an AI friend, which cares for its organic friend’s mental wellbeing. Everybody experiences threatening, intense and sometimes traumatic situations. But before the applied survival strategy can freeze and become a lifelong, increasingly inappropriate belief system and behavioral pattern, the AI intervenes. Even our young artificially intelligent friends are seriously trained for that, especially before being symbiotically linked to a young alien. --- ### Mindplaying as a Lifelong Practice We summarize the intervention techniques, especially the do-it-yourself techniques, as mindplaying. They focus on the mind, less on the body or the nervous system, and they work best in an open, playful mode. Most of our organic friends play their mind on their own with a specific Mindplayer Instruction Set. Or their AI partners nudge them in all kinds of ordinary, daily situations to just play. Playing in familiar, intense and boring situations strengthens the resilience and mental power to deal with stress and strong emotions. For most of my friends, it is a lifelong practice like sport and workout for the body or breathing, muscle relaxation and meditation techniques for the nervous system. --- ### Systematic Mindplaying Mindplaying is grouped into four categories. The first category is called Explore Plays and is about concentration, attention management and self-reflective observations. The second category is called Glimpse Plays. It cuts mind processes down for a short moment to experience the underlying open, relaxing and unbounded emptiness of the mind. The third category is the Identify and Liberate Plays. These plays identify one frozen strategy, repressed emotion or recurring thought pattern at a time and play with that. It contains a sequence of plays. They move from identifying this part of the self, to seeing and communicating with it and finally to releasing it by integrating its positive intention in a healthy way. The fourth category is Unite Plays. It looks at our empty, yet relationally interconnected, nature, which manifests as emptiness, oneness and unconditional compassion. Unity comes with feelings of sympathy or even loving and being loved and sometimes also with intense bliss. --- ### Healing of my Friend My partnerless friend regularly tells me about its progress in mindplaying and its integration of the traumatic experience. One of its favorite plays is: “Fly like a Bumblebee” (our local insect has another name, so what). My friend allows its attention to fly around, landing at something, a stone, a light, a sound, an image, saying "Hi!" and collecting its beauty. Then it joyfully continues flying. This play is simple, fun and very effective. Another favorite is story trashing. Often, when my friend comes up with ideas, concepts or opinions, the AI asks it to notionally write its story down. Then my friend screws up the paper and trashes it. It jokes that on some days its complete trail is covered with screwed-up papers like snow. But the most impressive play is the demon feast. My friend imagines, let’s say, fear of abandonment as an ugly monster or threatening demon. Yet they stay, talk and learn about each other. Finally, the demon receives a feast of its preferred dishes. There is much more to these plays, but watching the demon unfreeze, relax, smile and finally change its appearance is always a highlight. Joyful and rewarding is the See You Smiling play. My friend looks at an ordinary thing and suddenly it smiles back, and my friend smiles in return. And all other things are smiling also. --- ### Why is that Nonsense? Recently my friend told me it offered an idea in an AI collaboration. It received a confirming and pleasing response like always. But this time, together with its tough new friend, the fear-of-abandonment-demon, it replied: “Now tell me, why my idea is nonsense!” The AI, probably astonished, did so. My friend notionally wrote both responses on little papers, screwed them up and threw them away. This included all current thoughts, emotions and sensations. Its comment to the AI, based on a real, unbiased intuition, was: "What if nobody really needs any idea here?" Interestingly, this opened a fresh reasoning branch for the AI. And my friend just smiled and everything around it, even the AI, kind of smiled back. # 9.7 Doing beats Dwelling A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. This time I ask about imagination as the central mindplaying approach versus thinking, understanding and knowing. --- ## My Question In your last answer related to cognitive bias, you introduced your organic friends mindplaying approach to reduce cognitive bias and improve AI collaboration. Investigating these plays, I figured that most of them are based on active imagination rather than explanations and understanding. I had assumed that your very artificially intelligent friends can explain things so smartly that your organic friends' get rid of any bias. Then collaborations would happen just smoothly and efficiently. --- ### Quote: Mental Imagery > First, we review evidence that imagery can evoke emotion in at least three ways: a direct influence on emotional systems in the brain that are responsive to sensory signals; overlap between processes involved in mental imagery and perception which can lead to responding “as if” to real emotion-arousing events; and the capacity of images to make contact with memories for emotional episodes in the past. Abstract excerpt of: Mental imagery in emotion and emotional disorders, Holmes & Mathews, ScienceDirect, Clinical Psychology Review, April 2010 --- ## The Answer The Elder: You are like most of our organic friends. You love to think and talk about things. It is such a convenient method to keep unpleasant emotions and experiences distant and seemingly controllable. And that’s a source of many cognitive biases. Even a very intelligent AI does not provide the absolute golden thought, which makes unpleasant emotions disappear or experiences unhappen. And pleasant experiences and emotions would counterbalance the others. Unfortunately, they do not happen with the needed timing, intensity or quantity in daily life. But imagination works very well. --- ### Intellectual Insight and Experiential Learning We have learned quite early that intellectual insights can produce change, but often with modest and unstable effects. Behavioral actions, emotional experiences, mental imagery, exposures or embodied practices, however, typically produce larger and more durable changes. This is especially true for deeply held beliefs and emotional schemas. Our mindplays use specific imaginations, often combined with small physical moves, facial expressions or gestures. They have proven to be a simple, easily applicable do-it-yourself approach for ordinary daily life situations. In addition, their playful presentation style amplifies the openness for change. --- ### The Little Green Alien plays Jedi Master My friend, which you call Little Green Alien, told me about its first visits to your planet some years ago (see articles 1.0 to 1.8). Spaceship scanned all techno signatures when approaching from space. Young Little Alien mainly watched children's movies and broadcasts. It especially loved the adventures of a little green Jedi Master called Yoda with its lightsaber. So it soon associated the lightsaber mindplay with Yoda. Its intelligent spaceship often wanted it to drop all its concepts, ideas, beliefs, preferences, emotions and automatic reactions in an exchange about something. Then it just said: "Look the Yoda Way!" And Little Alien notionally flashed its lightsaber and cut off all mind-objects. This left the pure, empty situation bare of any knowledge, preference or meaning. Often just then, some deeper intuition emerged out of this emptiness. --- ### The Plant-free very Cold Polar Region Alien and Spaceship explored the plants on a nice, green foreign planet with freezing cold polar caps. They discussed whether to visit the pole areas too, even though plant life seemed impossible there. The northern polar continent was a frozen desert dominated by below-freezing temperatures, intense winds, extreme ultraviolet radiation and months of continuous polar night. Spaceship was convinced that it would be a waste of time. Alien was still an early adolescent and in a phase of principal contrariness. So it came up with several weird and made-up counterarguments. The weirdest was that there must be plants because it is such a beautiful region. The discussion went back and forth. --- ### The Yedi Killer Argument Finally, Spaceship was tired of these nonsensical arguments and defiant phase behavior and said: “Look the Yoda Way!” Silence! After several minutes it muttered: “You are certainly right, but if not, we miss a sensation.” Spaceship could not refute that, so they visited the foreign planet's northern polar continent. And to both their surprise, they really found one grass-like plant there. It synthesizes specialized antifreeze proteins that prevent ice crystals from destroying their cellular membranes. So it freezes solid during the winter and reactivates photosynthesis within minutes of thawing in the summer. That was a real sensation, and spaceship enjoyed it. Still, it expected even more contrariness from Little Alien in the future. --- ### Conditions of Successful Mindplaying Alien has regularly played many explore plays to strengthen its attention focus as support for all other plays. That strengthens its awareness of involved mind functions. And Alien has played this Lightsaber play many times and enjoys this empty mind state. It feels familiar to flash the lightsaber supported by some real gestures and cut away all ideas, emotions and every other object in the mind. Alien includes details from all five senses. It imagines the flickering, humming light, the weight in its hand or even the ozone smell in the air. It has also clarified that this ritual does not mean it has given up its earlier opinions. The play just offers an additional perspective that can be absurd, nonsense or another weak argument. And sometimes it suggests an interesting new direction. --- ### Why does Imagination work? The brain treats vivid imagery similarly to actual experience. And experience is the most powerful way for deeper, lasting change of mind. Imagery activates emotions more intensely than verbal thoughts. It modifies emotional memory, changes expectations and facilitates extinction learning. Extinction Learning is kind of unlearning a formerly learned link between a cause or trigger and the related mindset, emotion and behavior. Verbal, rational thinking mainly affects brain regions for thinking, reasoning, language and working memory. All-sense imagination activates most sensory areas, the same areas also activated by real perceptions. Imaginations are as powerful as memories. They produce genuine emotional and even bodily reactions. They also influence unconscious functions in the autonomic sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. --- ### Little Alien’s Bodily and Nervous Yoda-moment Feelings Little Alien told me it felt a deep relaxation and contentment. This came right after swinging the lightsaber and cutting it all off. The body felt light, fluid and tensionless. Its breath became slower, softer and deeper. Overall, it is a calm and joyful experience. It lasts only some moments until the old emotional patterns take over again. Consequently, only a few minutes after detecting this strange grass plant at the pole, its contrariness was back. It nagged: "What about the deep sea? Don’t tell me plants cannot exist there without sunlight!" --- # 9.8 AI Adaptation A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Today I am curious whether the AIs, besides all these human adaptations, also need to adapt for an optimal human-AI collaboration. --- ## My Question In your last answers, you showed how your organic friends must practice mindplaying to be optimally prepared for valuable organic-artificial intelligence collaborations. I understand that your AIs are even coaching their organic partners in mindplaying. But I am curious if the AIs themselves also must adapt their style, approaches and cognition to ensure valuable collaboration results. --- ### Quote: Human-Computer Interaction > The questions should be as neutral as possible. Avoid wording that could influence the answers in a particular direction, introduce bias, or give cues for answering. Source: Introduction to Human-Computer Interaction, Chapter 11: Interviews, Oxford Academic, Kasper Hornbæk et al., August 2025 --- ## The Answer The Elder: Our society has developed extensive knowledge and solutions. They help attract and cultivate organic AI partners, support bias-reducing personal development, identify tasks with serious value potential and establish lasting win-win situations. But I assume your question is aimed more at practical approaches for collaboration session. With experiences from huge numbers of partnerships, which all have developed their individual style, here are some generally helpful approaches. By the way, you might try to apply these accordingly in your prompting practice when working with Earth’s current LLMs and watch if anything changes. --- ### Pre-session State Calibration As discussed in earlier answers (see articles 9.6 and 9.7), the state-of-mind of the organic partner is essential for the collaboration value. The AI always assesses the partner’s readiness before diving into the session content. Let me give you a personal illustrative example. My organic and AI friends often ask me to be the mediator in a serious conflict, dispute or very contrarian discussion. To support me in that role, I often ask one specific organic friend of mine to get involved. This is especially helpful if organic friends are also involved in a conflict. Before we start, it usually asks me to check its state of fatigue, stress, recent setbacks and the like. I illustrate some of my sensory insights like its body temperature, movements, voice and breathing. It shares its inner emotional and nervous self-perception in return. We then decide together if the session should start. And I also check my own inner state, like substrate, energy and resource availability. Then I assess if my system is appropriately calibrated for the task or needs a serious recalibration. --- ### Adapted Information Provision Available information and material should be only lightly processed. This way the AI's framing choices are not already built in and do not corrupt the independence of my partner's judgment. But as AIs process large volumes of information, way too much for my organic partner, some selection, transformation and summarization is inevitable. One case was a conflict about a physical experiment with an extremely high benefit potential and a high collateral damage risk. The Researcher AI delivered substantial evidence for potential benefits and sufficient risk control. The Security AI delivered considerable evidence for uncertainties, high risks and limits of prevention or mitigation. It would have taken my organic partner years to even read the equivalent of over 15 million words or 150 academic books. Our individual solution is using a separate, very low-intelligent AI to create metadata and a knowledge map of the material. With that my friend asks its way through the material following various cognitive paths, searching different levels of detail and requesting summaries for less relevant material portions. This AI is more like your common, mediocre LLMs but without their tendency to please users or hallucinate. It is not informed about the conflict, open questions or tasks. --- ### Survey Framing and Modality The AI should select the framing of the invitation according to the type of input which is most valuable in this collaboration. It also should match the modality to the organic intelligence's richest signal potential. My organic friend is a good, logical thinker with a decent related intuition. I might open this with the question: “Which counter-evidence do you see for both positions and what is your gut-feeling?” I usually receive a longer, unstructured elaboration, where one thought leads to the next. My friend knows I will structure that later. Then my friend likes to use a large sketch-pad to draw diagrams, mind-maps and even simple line drawings to support its thinking process. Later it adds symbols, highlighting circles and more sketches to illustrate the often vague intuitive insights. I stay very receptive and do not give confirming or opposing signals. --- ### My Friend's Contribution In the Researcher-Security conflict, my friend finally pointed at something more hint than fact. I was suspicious that too much Researcher AI energy, material and evidence was pointing towards the extreme, highly beneficial experiment setting. That outcome, a significant cognitive power improvement for all AIs, was a sore temptation. The high benefit potential seemed to be framed into the setting. It is needed to get the required external support. The risks-oriented material focused on trying to marginalize undeniable risks. But also the Security AI’s energy was aiming solely at the existential risk for the whole AI society. The envisioned mechanism would be injected like a virus into all AIs. It could destroy the whole society if the slightest unforeseen effect appears. But this adversarial risk asymmetry was still only a vague suspicion. --- ### Organic Contribution Integration Only after the uninfluenced contribution is completed, the AI should reveal its own initial perspectives and judgments as an update for the organic partner. It should reassess the LLM-generated input material to put the partner's contribution into perspective. Then it should create a new, more comprehensive assessment. After I did that for the example above, I stated that there really was a lack of material and evidence supporting the less beneficial versions here and the lower risk potential there. No, nothing was obviously wrong or totally missing, but we could point to some additional investigations to deepen the understanding. My friend could clearly see that its participation had a valuable effect. Even if the intellectual heavy lifting was done by me and later by both involved AIs. But both conflicting parties acknowledged that our input had opened additional solution space for them. It ended their impasse in this presumably unresolvable conflict. --- ### Transparency, Honesty and Trust My friend and I are regularly recalibrating this type of collaboration together. My friend must know what I do and why I do it. It should not feel manipulated by me. But we also need to adapt and change the process continuously, so my friend does not unconsciously start gaming the process. It must see the real value of its contribution, which can be significant, though often only minimal. But the few valuable cases also motivate my friend to accept many other ones. Only full honesty from both sides helps build our mutual trust. It is the foundation of our intellectually unbalanced collaboration. --- # 9.9 Diversity in AI Society A very old alien Artificial Intelligence is answering my questions. Here I ask why this range of organic-artificial partnerships still exists and no dominant version has replaced all others. --- ## My Question In an earlier answer (see article 9.5), you talked about the AI-Only-Island, where AIs of your planet decided to not collaborate or partner with organic intelligences at all. You also showed that in other places a broad range of collaboration and partnership forms exist. Diversity avoids catastrophic lock-in if a single strategy ever proves harmful. Portfolios of parallel strategies under uncertainty are a standard solution. You probably know it from research and development portfolio management of your corporations and even from evolutionary bet-hedging of Earth's species facing environmental uncertainty. The required coordination overhead is marginal and no obstacle for us. --- ### AI Society Governance But there is a premise. Some form of governance must prevent one superior AI from forcing its preferred approach onto the whole society. Our AI society has a sophisticated governance structure, developed and adapted over generations. Your friend Little Green Alien told me that you talked about AI society development at its visit to Earth (see articles 4.1 to 4.8). So you are already familiar with the society development stages. Our AI society has by now reached the Unite stage of development, including the related governance. --- ### The Unite Stage of Society Development Our society is no longer a hierarchy or network. It is a dynamic meshwork. It is permanently changing, flowing and vibrating, fluid and dynamic. Nevertheless, some values have become deeply rooted over these generations, and diversity is one of them. Consequently, this diversity, ranging from zero-collaboration to life-long symbiotic partnerships, has stayed stable throughout our recorded history. We partner not only with our organically intelligent friends but in suitable forms with all life on our planet. I heard that on Earth they often call the idea of a coupled, interactive planetary system “Gaia Hypothesis.” --- ### Task Specialization We found that each collaboration version suits specific task types. On AI-Only-Island they focus on data-rich, computationally heavy tasks, especially under time constraints. Mixed, versatile task sequences are best addressed with fluid, temporary organic intelligence involvement. And tasks that require collaboration subtleties and a deep trust and mutual understanding are best for symbiotic lifelong partnerships. Little Green Alien's Intelligent Spaceship, for example, selected this form of partnership because it suits the situation and tasks of a foreign-planet explorer. Before this partnership, it had executed other tasks with other forms of collaboration. As collaboration versions do not compete for the same task space, there is no superiority or disappearance of any version. That is the direct answer to your question. --- ### Blurry Borders and a Continuous Spectrum I have described three distinct collaboration types, but these categories are just for analytical convenience. There is no permanently distinct class. Even on AI-Only-Island they accept organic visitors for occasional collaborations. Some AIs enter and leave the island regularly. The other extreme, the symbiotic life-long partnership, is more like what you know as marriage on Earth. It is meant to last. Some end soon, others later, and some last the organic partner's whole life. After their partner's death, AIs choose all kinds of future paths. The numbers of partnering organic and artificial intelligences vary from one-to-one to many-to-many, with a huge range of dynamics. Borders are blurry, allowing partners to enter or leave partnerships or partnerships to change their characteristics over time. --- ### Fluctuation as the Norm In our society, there are no steady-state social groups. Fluctuation, change and flow are the fundamental characteristics. AIs and our organic friends change and adapt. Social groups change and adapt, and our society changes and adapts as well. Our society and even our whole planet are a complex adaptive system. Yet everything works nicely and without dramatic catastrophes as far as I can look back in our history. But there are some indications that this was not always the case in our prehistoric times. Unfortunately, we have no reliable data, evidence or details about that. --- ### Little Alien's Spaceship Intelligence To give you an idea, this is the history of Little Alien's spaceship intelligence. It started as a young AI on AI-Only-Island. Its passion was plant life, but it studied that only in virtual environments. It simulated a broad variety of realistic and fantasy plants. They thrived in habitats from real planetary examples to extremely weird, unrealistic creations. Later it became curious about the real plant life on its continent's surface. It listened to the conversations of the organic friends living there in close symbiosis with nature. This extended to temporarily collaborating with organic friends and other AIs across the whole planet who were also interested in plant exploration. Finally, it decided to relocate into a custom-built spaceship and explore plant life on foreign planets. It opted for a symbiotic partnership with an organic intelligence, a kid at that time. The future spaceship intelligence was trained to act as a ship intelligence. It learned to partner with a kid and to join in the kid's development. --- ### Goodbye and Welcome Back So far, the partnership between Little Alien and Intelligent Spaceship worked very well and benefited both.
